Colombia opened its borders to Portuguese pork producers, after years of negotiation, and the opening of the Chinese market may happen soon.

The Portuguese minister of Agriculture, Luís Capoulas Santos, announced the opening of the Colombian market to pig production coming from Portugal, reports the online edition of Público newspaper. Portuguese pork producers will have the possibility to export to Colombia, in "another opportunity to drain production, at a time when the price of pork remains low and requests of more support continue".

To Lusa news agency, the president of FPAS (Portuguese Federation of Pig Farming Associations) Vítor Menino, given the need to "have opened doors", welcomed the opening of the borders of a "stable country (...) very well located geographically and where the standard of living allows fundamental businesses" like Colombia.

Regarding the Chinese market, "Portugal is one step away from exporting pork, both fresh and processed, to China" as reports the online edition of OJE newspaper.

China, which already imports from Spain since the adoption of animal welfare legislation began to cause "lack of product to meet the demand" and increased "the need to resort to foreign markets", may soon open its borders to Portugal, depending on the technical advice from chinese health authorities.

During a visit to Portuguese national territory, the Chinese vice-minister of Agriculture, Bi Meijia, announced the execution of a memorandum between China and Portugal in agricultural matters, assessing as "very positive" the meeting held with the Portuguese minister of Agriculture.

Luís Capoulas Santos, Portuguese minister of Agriculture, ranked China as a "very important market for farmers and consumers", identifying "a huge potential growth" and "all the conditions to deepen the relationship between the two countries".
